Mathis has been recognized as the resident primitive/folk artist in Nashville, Indiana's historic art colony for over 25 years. Working in acrylic, the artist breaks away from traditional landscapes and still life paintings. Mathis' imagination explodes on canvas with delightful primitives, capturing scenes both past and present. The artist's style omits facial features, but the distinguishing characteristics of dress, form and stance make it easy to determine who the subject is. The artist's use of vibrant colors and fresh whimsical humor combine for a simple, appealing charm. Mathis travels the U.S. displaying paintings in art fairs, exhibits and galleries. Some fairs and exhibits Mathis has participated in are: Summer Fair, Cincinnati, OH, St. James Court, Louisville, KY, Talbot Street and Broadripple Art Fairs, Penrod Art Fair Indianapolis, IN, St. Augustine Art Fair, St. Augustine, FL, Evanston Lakeshore Art Festival, Evanston, IL, The Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage Arts and the Indiana State Fair. Galleries representing the artist are located in Indiana, Florida, Texas, and California.
